The Yellow Cult

From Medaevum

Also called The Cult to the King in Yellow, they espouse the beliefs and practices of their patron, the King in Yellow. A greater deity not often worshipped on Ayaria but of truly immense power, rivalling or exceeding entire lesser pantheons.

Agenda

What the King in Yellow wants is not known for certain, but can only be inferred. While many of his cultists may claim to know what the true agenda of their patron is, the veracity of their words is impossible to ascertain.

The King in Yellow seems to be a being of madness. A being who seeks out those prone to bouts of madness - artists, writers, unstable people - and try to lure them in. Often so subtly that one does not realize their insanity originates with the King in Yellow, and not from within themselves.

The King in Yellow seems to appreciate art. Art that is so elaborate and exotic as to be madenning, art that only a select few could appreciate, art that perhaps even the artist finds horrible to behold. The King in Yellow also seems to appreciate bringing an end to things. Unraveling what others have made. Finding stacks of cards, and knocking them down. Particularly, when applied to the delicate minds of one's fellow man.

  • Spread the Yellow Sign.
  • Cause moral people to commit immoral acts.
  • Drive others to despair and ruin.

Sins

These actions will lead to penance or even excommunication if severe enough.

  • Abandoning the King.

Domains

The King in Yellow exercises domains of entropy, madness, paint, theatre, and music.

Ranks

The King in Yellow is not a formal part of any pantheon, but is thought to be the first discovered Aureum or Golden God in elven astronomy. As such, it can support cultists up to the rank of Exalt.

Initiation

The creation of a great art. The Yellow Sign is to be shown to an initiate, and then allowed to take over their mind until it reaches a breaking point, a point of abject madness, at which point they will be compelled to create something.

Neophyte

They feel a subtle itching madness in the back of their mind that never really goes away.

  • Their Erudition raises by one.

Follower

  • Their itching madness becomes worse if they aren't wearing, wielding, or holding something that's the color yellow.
  • They learn one of the King in Yellow's spells.

Adept

  • They gain the ability to consume the souls of others through their art. If they know the true name of someone, they can then create a piece of art that draws out their target's soul and imbues it into the art. These souls can be stored in instruments, canvasses of art, or any other tool or work of art. The target must be in their vicinity over the course of the ritual, and the process takes one hour per soul their target possesses. They can choose to use these vessels for souls as part of other magical rituals, or consume them without destroying the art in the process.
