Information on their patron Valor and his edicts can be found here: The Pentarchy.

Agenda

Valor believes in proactively seeking out and destroying the evils of the world, ideally before they've had a chance to inflict harm on others. A common metaphor for this is the hydra: the knights of Valor cut off one head, and two more appear. Some Valorites grow disheartened and cynical about their mission, the self-fulfilling nature of evil, while others truly believe that one day if there are enough of them they'll be able to kill the hydra for good.

Valor also strongly supports community, if in the limited sense that communities should have a dedicated body of martial warriors to protect them. To this end, Valor supports all actions that lead to fostering trust between a militant nobility of brave knights and those they are protecting. Knights of Valor are supposed to keep their word, and act on behalf of their liege, even if those actions don't necessarily align with the immediate interests of Valor himself.

Valor is only interested in justice insofar as it leads to results and fosters community. Valor would not condone destroying a system that swiftly and effectively punishes evildoers. Valor would condone destroying a system that does not destroy evil, but allows it to fester. The rule of law is only useful insofar as it doesn't get in the way of the big picture: protecting good people through proactive deeds.

  • Destroy evil things in the world.
  • Perform deeds on behalf of the community, whether they be virtuous or not, in furtherance of the community.
  • Investigate, and generate, credible reports on sources of evil.

Sins

These actions will lead to penance or even excommunication if severe enough.

  • Breaking the faith with one's community if that community has not abandoned them first.
  • Breaking their given word.
  • Abetting evil deeds.

Domains

Valor holds power over domain of War, Iron, and... Valor.

Ranks

The powers and abilities that Valorites get at each rank. Valor is a lesser god by the reckoning of his native Nostrum, and so can only support followers of up to Adept level.

Initiation

The prospective Valorite is asked to duel a succession of other faithful. While those of great skill are lauded, those who fall to the first squire they face in such a duel and still want to become a member of the faith are considered especially zealous.

Some time after this initiation rite, there comes an oath swearing ceremony where the initiate is asked to swear personal oaths of action to Valor.

Neophyte

Their physical body is bolstered in a subtle but meaningful way, as they feel the presence of Valor inside them.

  • Their Prowess raises by one.

Follower

Choose one:

  • They are granted a magical sword that, when wielded, also increases their Prowess by one.
  • They gain the effects of the Tall trait as their body changes to fit their preconceived ideal of a noble knight.
  • A squire becomes divinely inspired to become their follower.

Adept

Choose one:

  • Their sword is further reinforced, increasing the prowess of its wielder by two. Assuming they didn't lose it, of course.
  • Three knights of Valor become divinely inspired to become their follower.
